Why the post exists

We are seeking additional non-executive Directors to join the Chamber’s Board of Directors to support its succession plan.

Non-executive Directors are accountable to the Chair of the Board of Directors, and are representative of the Chamber’s membership in regard to sector, geography and size of business.

Overview

Key areas of responsibility

  • To provide unique attributes that contribute to the development and progression of the Chamber
  • To support and challenging the Executive Team to meet the needs of its members, customers and the wider business community
  • To review the Chamber’s performance against the Business Plan and budget on a regular basis
  • To undertake and accept all fiduciary duties and responsibilities as determined by the Chamber’s Articles of Association
  • To facilitate development of East Midlands Chamber policies
  • To work collectively with other members of the Board to give direction to the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the smooth running of all aspects of East Midlands Chamber
  • To be an effective ambassador of the Chamber
  • To consider and approve the Annual Report and Statutory Accounts for presentation to the members at the Annual General Meeting
  • To participate at all Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting
  • To participate in one or more committees or sub-groups of the Board, possibly on a rotational basis (to experience all aspects of the Chamber’s business), including taking on the role and responsibilities of chairing such committees or sub-groups
  • To discuss and develop the Terms of Reference of such committees/consultative forums/focus groups/working groups as are required for the efficient operation and development of the Chamber and review regularly their performance and continued relevance
  • To support the activities of the Chamber in any way they are able

Overview

Ideally applicants will possess

  • Excellent diplomatic skills and demonstrate good political awareness
  • Experience of dealing with businesses and an understanding of their needs
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of central and local government
  • Proven ability to think and act strategically

The Chamber is particularly seeking applications from business leaders in the following sectors to bolster the Board’s experience following the scheduled retirement of non-executive Directors at its 2023 AGM:

  • Financial sector
  • Bolstering manufacturing representation on the Board as manufacturing and engineering is the largest membership sector. This could manifest itself as:
    • A food and drink producer to provide variety of different types of manufacturing
    • A manufacturer that exports a significant percentage of their products
  • Digital services sector
  • Green technology and decarbonisation sector

First, you’ll be invited to interview either virtually via Microsoft Teams or onsite at one of our offices (role dependent). If your interview goes well, you may invited to attend a second interview or offered the role. Some interviews might require you to compile some research or to prepare a presentation. At the end of the interview, the interviewer will confirm the timeline for next steps.

Interviews usually last around an hour with a mix of competency based interview questions, and in some cases, we might ask you to carry out some practical exercises.

Decisions will be made at each stage of the process, as we score applicants against the role criteria. If you’re successful, we will contact you to make an offer. This will be followed up in writing and a contract will be sent to you once a start date is confirmed. If you have any questions, please just get in touch.
